What happened on Ghadir ?

First things first, who is Imam Ali?

Ali PBUH (Peace be upon him), son of Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of the last messenger of Allah SWT (سبحانه و تعالی) prophet Muhammed PBUH, was the first divinely appointed Imam.

He was the first Muslim who accepted Islam. You can guess how hard it would have been for a teenager to believe in some

one, knowing that doing so, will turn all society against him.

He brought victory to the Muslims during the major battles of Islam, his courage earned him the title LION OF GOD.

During that time, the muhajir and Ansar were commanded to make pacts of brotherhood, the prophet selected Ali as his brother.

What is more, the prophet married his only daughter-lady Fatima- to Ali.

Now why do we say he was chosen to be the first Imam?

Maybe the most important reason for this question Is the day of Ghadir.

The importance of Ghadir story in the history of Islam is undeniable, according to both Shia and Sunni sources. 10 years after the migration of the Prophet (from Mecca to Medina), when the Prophet and a group of his companions were returning from Hajj, they arrived at a pond called Ghadir.

When the Prophet (P.B.U.H) was passing by this place on (18th of Dhu’l-Hijja) , the verse was revealed : ” O Messenger, Proclaim what has been sent down to you from your God ; and if you don’t do it, you have not delivered His Message; and Allah will protect you from the people (Qur’an: Chapter 5, Verse 67).

therefore he stopped to make an announcement to the pilgrims who accompanied him from Mecca.

By the orders of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) a special pulpit was made for him. After noon prayers the Prophet (P.B.U.H) stood on the pulpit and made his last public speech to the largest gathering before his death.

He pointed out the message of Allah by taking Imam Ali’s hand and asking his followers if they believed in his authority. The crowd cried out in unison: “It is so, O Apostle of Allah”.

He then declared: “For whoever I am his mawla, Ali is his mawla. O God, befriend he who is his friend, and consider he who is his enemy as yours.”

Immediately after the Prophet (P.B.U.H) finished his speech, the following verse of the Qur’an was revealed: Today I have perfected your religion for you and have completed my favor upon you, and have chosen for you as religion al-Islam. (Qur’an 5:3)

After his speech, the Prophet (P.B.U.H) asked everybody to take an oath of allegiance to ‘Ali (A.S) and congratulate him.
